Notion MCP

Notion MCP gives agents authenticated read and write access to pages, databases, workspace search, tasks, documentation, and reporting workflows.

Verdict

The Notion MCP connects your workspace's AI to Notion databases, pages, and blocks. @Mention it to query content across workspaces, create or update pages, search by property filters, and pull structured data into your Projects. Marketing teams use it to draft campaign briefs from existing templates, product managers to sync roadmap updates, and ops teams to log meeting notes directly into shared databases. Setup requires OAuth with read and write permissions — you'll grant access to specific workspaces during connection.

Common use cases

  • Draft project briefs from template pages
  • Log standup notes into team databases
  • Search meeting docs by attendee or date
  • Update roadmap status across workspaces
  • Pull research findings into summary reports

Setup

Setup guide

  1. 11. In Switchy, open your workspace settings and navigate to the Integrations tab. 2. Click 'Add MCP Integration' and select Notion from the list. 3. You'll be redirected to Notion's OAuth consent screen — sign in and choose which workspaces to connect. 4. Grant read content, write content, and search permissions when prompted. 5. After authorization, Switchy returns you to the integrations page with Notion now listed as active. 6. Open any Project and type '@Notion' followed by a request like 'search for pages tagged Q1 planning' to confirm the connection works. 7. If the MCP responds with results or confirms the action, setup is complete.

What teammates see: by default, memories from Notion MCP are scoped to the Project (PROJECT visibility) - you can mark any memory PRIVATE or share it ORG-wide.

Starter prompts

Search Recent Meetings

@Notion search for all pages with type 'Meeting Notes' created in the last 14 days, then summarize the action items and decisions from each.

Create Project Brief

@Notion create a new page in the 'Projects' database with title 'Q2 Campaign Launch', set status to 'Planning', and add sections for Goals, Timeline, and Budget.

Update Roadmap Status

@Notion find all pages in 'Product Roadmap' where status is 'In Progress' and owner is 'Design Team', then update their status to 'In Review'.

Pull Research Findings

@Notion search for pages tagged 'User Research' and 'Q1 2024', then pull the 'Key Insights' section from each and compile them into a bulleted list.

Log Standup Notes

@Notion create a new entry in 'Daily Standups' for today with my name as owner, add 'Completed design reviews, blocked on API access' under Updates, and set priority to 'Medium'.

Example outputs

Illustrative - representative of the model's voice and quality, not literal recordings.

Prompt

@notion search for all pages tagged 'Q1 planning' and show me their status properties

Output

Found 7 pages matching 'Q1 planning'. Here's an illustrative summary: 'Product Roadmap Q1' (status: In Progress), 'Marketing Campaign Brief' (status: Not Started), 'Engineering Capacity Plan' (status: Complete), 'Budget Allocation Draft' (status: In Review), plus three additional pages. Each entry includes the page title, current status value, and last edited timestamp. This example assumes your workspace uses a 'Status' property — actual property names vary by database schema.

Notes

This demonstrates read-only search across your Notion workspace. Requires OAuth scope for page content and properties. Results depend on your workspace's database structure and property naming conventions. Large workspaces may hit rate limits on broad searches.

Prompt

@notion create a new page in the 'Meeting Notes' database with title 'Sprint Retro - Jan 15' and add a bullet list of action items

Output

Created page 'Sprint Retro - Jan 15' in the Meeting Notes database. Added three action items as an illustrative example: investigate deployment pipeline delays, schedule follow-up with design team on component library, and update onboarding docs with new tooling. The page is now visible to anyone with database access. Actual formatting and available properties depend on your database template settings.

Notes

This shows the MCP's ability to write new content into structured databases. Requires OAuth write permissions. You must specify an existing database by name or ID — the MCP cannot create databases themselves. Side-effect: immediately visible to workspace members with access.

Prompt

@notion pull all pages modified in the last week from the 'Product Specs' database and summarize what changed

Output

Retrieved 4 pages modified in the last 7 days from Product Specs. Illustrative summary: 'Mobile Checkout Flow' added acceptance criteria and updated target launch date to Feb 10. 'API Rate Limiting Strategy' received comments from three reviewers and status changed to 'Needs Revision'. 'User Permissions Model' had minor copy edits. 'Analytics Dashboard Requirements' was created 2 days ago with initial scope definition. This synthesis combines the MCP's retrieval with AI reasoning to highlight key changes.

Notes

This example pairs Notion's query capabilities with the AI's summarization. Useful for standup prep or weekly reviews. Requires read access to the specified database. The AI interprets page history and property changes — accuracy depends on how your team structures updates in Notion.

Use-case deep-dives

Weekly sprint retro documentation

When Notion MCP fits async team reflection workflows

A 6-person engineering team runs Friday retros and wants the AI to pull last week's completed tasks, blockers, and Slack threads into a single Notion page. The Notion MCP handles OAuth2 so each teammate authenticates once, then the AI can read from their shared workspace and write structured retro notes without manual copy-paste. This works if your retro format is consistent (same page template, same database properties). If your retros are freeform or change shape every week, the AI will struggle to map fields correctly and you'll spend more time fixing formatting than you save. The buying call: use this when your retro structure is locked and you want to eliminate the 20-minute doc-prep tax every Friday.

Customer onboarding checklist tracking

Notion MCP for client handoff at 3-10 accounts

A 4-person agency onboards new clients with a 40-step checklist in Notion (contracts signed, Slack invited, credentials shared, kickoff scheduled). The Notion MCP lets the AI update checklist status, flag overdue items, and surface blockers during Monday standups without opening Notion manually. OAuth2 means each account manager authenticates their own Notion, so the AI sees only their client pages. This scales to about 10 active clients; beyond that, Notion's API rate limits start causing 30-second delays when the AI queries multiple databases. If you're onboarding 2-3 clients a month and checklists live in Notion already, this eliminates the context-switch tax. If you're at 20+ clients, you need a dedicated onboarding tool with faster APIs.

Product roadmap prioritization sync

When Notion MCP bridges roadmap and daily work

A product team of 5 keeps their quarterly roadmap in a Notion database (features ranked by impact score, owner assigned, status tracked). During planning, they want the AI to pull the top 10 unstarted features, compare them to current sprint capacity in Linear, and suggest what fits this week. The Notion MCP reads the roadmap database via OAuth2, so the AI sees live priority scores and dependencies. This works if your roadmap schema is stable (same properties, same scoring method). If your PM changes the database structure every quarter or priority is debated in comments rather than structured fields, the AI will misread intent and suggest the wrong features. The call: use this when your roadmap is a single source of truth with clean data, not a discussion forum.

Frequently asked

What does the Notion MCP do in Switchy?

It connects your Notion workspace to Switchy's AI agents so they can read pages, databases, and blocks without you copying content manually. Your team can ask questions about project docs, meeting notes, or roadmaps stored in Notion and get answers that reference the actual source material. The MCP handles OAuth authentication so agents access only what your Notion permissions allow.

Do I need admin access to connect Notion MCP?

No, but you need permission to install integrations in your Notion workspace. During OAuth setup, you'll choose which pages and databases the MCP can access. If your workspace admin has locked down integration installs, ask them to enable it for your account. The MCP only sees content you explicitly grant during the connection flow.

Can the Notion MCP create or edit pages?

That depends on the OAuth scopes the MCP requests during setup. Most read-focused MCPs only pull content for AI context. If you need agents to write back to Notion — creating tasks, updating databases, appending blocks — check whether the integration asks for write permissions when you connect it. If not, you'll need the Notion API directly or a different tool.

Why use this instead of just pasting Notion links into chat?

Pasting links forces you to manually copy content or give the AI a URL it can't read. The MCP pulls live data automatically, so answers reflect your latest docs without you doing anything. It's faster for teams that reference Notion constantly and want agents to cite specific pages or database rows without the copy-paste loop.

Who on the team should connect the Notion MCP?

Whoever owns the Notion workspace or has broad page access. Once connected, all Switchy team members can use the integration in their chats, but the MCP only accesses pages the connecting user shared during OAuth. If your team needs access to different Notion spaces, each person can connect their own Notion account separately.
