Switchy will verify the key and confirm the connection. 6. Open any Space and type '@U301 shorten https://example.com/very/long/url' to test. 7. U301 will reply with a shortened link in seconds. 8. @U301 shorten this URL for our campaign landing page: https://example.com/products/winter-sale-2024/category/outerwear?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=jan_promo
The long URL has been shortened to: https://u301.to/a3kL9m. This compact link redirects to your campaign landing page and preserves all UTM parameters. The short link is active immediately and does not expire unless you manually delete it through the U301 dashboard.
This example shows the core shortening capability. The MCP requires a valid API key with link-creation permissions. Note that U301 does not provide analytics or click tracking through the MCP — you'll need to check the vendor's dashboard for traffic metrics. Short links are permanent by default.
@U301 I need a short link for this documentation page to include in our Slack onboarding message: https://docs.internal.company.com/engineering/setup/local-development-environment-configuration-guide
Your documentation link is now: https://u301.to/dEv7Qp. The shortened URL points to your internal docs and will work for any team member with access to that domain. Since this is an internal resource, consider whether your firewall or VPN settings affect link resolution for remote employees.
This demonstrates shortening internal URLs. The MCP does not validate whether the target URL is publicly accessible — it will create a short link regardless. If your team uses VPNs or IP restrictions, test the short link from different network contexts before distributing it widely.
@U301 create short links for these three blog posts so I can tweet them: https://blog.example.com/2024/01/feature-announcement, https://blog.example.com/2024/01/customer-story-acme, https://blog.example.com/2024/01/engineering-deep-dive
Three short links created: 1. Feature announcement: https://u301.to/fT8nXk 2. Customer story: https://u301.to/cS4mYj 3. Engineering deep-dive: https://u301.to/eD9pZr Each link is ready to share on social media. The MCP processed these sequentially, so if you're shortening large batches, expect proportional API call usage against your account's rate limits.
This example shows batch processing of multiple URLs in a single prompt. The AI will call the shortening tool once per URL, which counts against your U301 API rate limit. If you regularly shorten dozens of links, monitor your quota usage. The MCP does not offer bulk-upload or CSV import — each URL is a separate tool invocation.
Use-case deep-dives
When short links keep support templates clean
A 3-person support team maintains 40+ saved replies in Intercom or Zendesk. Half of those replies include documentation links, onboarding videos, or account setup URLs that run 80+ characters and break template formatting. The U301 MCP is the right call here: one tool, API key auth, and it does exactly one thing—turn long URLs into short links before you paste them into a macro. The trade-off is minimal: if your team already uses Bitly or a branded short-link service, you don't need another tool. But if you're starting from scratch and want URL shortening inside the AI workspace where you draft those replies, U301 gets you there in under 5 minutes. Add it to your Switchy workspace, connect the API key, and your next macro refresh is cleaner.
When you need short links in bulk for email sends
A 2-person marketing team sends a weekly newsletter to 1,200 subscribers. Each issue includes 5-8 links to blog posts, case studies, and product updates. Long URLs clutter the email template and make click tracking harder to read in analytics. The U301 MCP works if you're already drafting newsletter copy in Switchy and want to shorten links on the fly without switching to a browser tab. The single-tool scope means you call it once per URL—no batch shortening, no link management dashboard. If you need branded domains, UTM parameter control, or link expiration, you'll want a full short-link platform instead. But for a small team that just wants clean links in the draft before copying to Mailchimp or ConvertKit, U301 keeps the workflow in one place.
When short links make Slack follow-ups readable
A 5-person sales team runs 12-15 product demos per week. After each call, the AE sends a Slack DM or email with links to the demo recording, a pricing calculator, and a trial signup page. Pasting three 90-character URLs into a Slack message looks messy and pushes the actual message text off-screen. The U301 MCP is a fit if your team drafts those follow-ups in Switchy and wants to shorten links before sending. The limitation: one URL at a time, no link analytics, no custom slugs. If your CRM already handles short links or you need to track click-through rates by prospect, skip this and use your CRM's built-in tool. But if you're writing follow-ups in a shared workspace and just want cleaner messages, U301 does the job without adding another SaaS login.
Frequently asked
What does the U301 MCP do in Switchy?
It shortens long URLs into compact links you can share. When your AI assistant generates or finds a long URL — say, from a search result or API response — it can call U301's shortening tool to create a cleaner link. Useful for reports, Slack messages, or anywhere character count matters.
Do I need a U301 account to use this MCP?
Yes. You'll need a U301 API key, which means signing up for their service first. Paste the key into Switchy's connection form and the MCP handles the rest. No OAuth dance — just a single static credential you copy from U301's dashboard.
Can it track click analytics or edit shortened links?
No. The MCP exposes one tool: shorten a URL. If you need click stats, custom slugs, or link expiration, you'll have to log into U301 directly or use their API outside Switchy. This integration is strictly for generating short links on the fly.
Why use this instead of Bitly or TinyURL?
U301 is a smaller, privacy-focused shortener with no tracking by default. If your team already uses U301 or wants to avoid the analytics overhead of Bitly, this MCP lets your AI shorten links without switching contexts. Otherwise, Bitly's MCP offers richer features.
Does each shortened link count against my Switchy plan?
No. Switchy doesn't meter link creation — that's between you and U301. If U301 has a monthly link quota on your plan, each call to the shortening tool consumes one link. Check your U301 tier to avoid hitting their cap mid-workflow.
