Modem MCP

Modem MCP lets authorized agents search synthesized customer feedback, run durable Modem Agent conversations, and manage topics, people, and companies.

Verdict

Modem MCP connects your team's AI to Modem's customer data platform, letting you manage companies, people, and support topics without leaving a Project. An @mention can create or merge records, bulk-update topic priorities, and track long-running agent workflows. Customer success and support teams get the most value — you can triage inbound requests, consolidate duplicate accounts, and keep your CRM clean while chatting through next steps. OAuth setup requires admin access to your Modem workspace, and some write operations need you to read a skill doc first to understand field constraints.

Common use cases

Setup

Setup guide

  1. 11. Open your Switchy workspace settings and navigate to the Integrations tab. 2. Find Modem MCP in the directory and click Connect. 3. You'll be redirected to Modem's OAuth consent screen — sign in with an account that has admin permissions on your Modem workspace. 4. Grant the requested scopes (read and write access to companies, people, topics, and agent runs). 5. Switchy confirms the connection and returns you to the integrations page. 6. Open any Project and type '@Modem' to verify the MCP responds. 7. Test the connection by asking '@Modem list the five most recent companies in our workspace' — you should see live data. 8. Before invoking write tools (create, merge, bulk update), ask '@Modem read the write-tools skill' so the AI understands required fields and validation rules.

What teammates see: by default, memories from Modem MCP are scoped to the Project (PROJECT visibility) - you can mark any memory PRIVATE or share it ORG-wide.

Starter prompts

Merge Duplicate Accounts

@Modem find companies named 'Acme Corp' and 'Acme Corporation', then merge the older one into the newer record.

Bulk Archive Topics

@Modem show me all topics tagged 'resolved' from last month, then archive them in one operation.

Create Company from Notes

@Modem create a new company called 'Northwind Traders' and add Sarah Chen (sarah@northwind.com) and Mike Okafor (mike@northwind.com) as contacts.

Check Agent Run Status

@Modem get the status of agent run ID abc-123 and summarize what it's doing right now.

Consolidate Contact Records

@Modem find all people with email ending in '@example.com' who have duplicate names, then merge them into single records.

Example outputs

Illustrative - representative of the model's voice and quality, not literal recordings.

Prompt

@modem find all topics tagged 'billing' that haven't been updated in the last 30 days and show me their current status

Output

Found 12 topics matching your criteria. Here's a summary: 8 are marked 'waiting-on-customer' (oldest from Nov 3), 3 are 'in-progress' but stalled (no activity since Dec 1-5), and 1 is still 'open' from Oct 28. The oldest topic (#4721) involves a disputed invoice from a company called Acme Industries. All 12 topics are currently assigned across your support team, with Sarah holding 5 of them.

Notes

This example shows Modem's ability to search and filter topics by metadata (tags, timestamps, status). The MCP requires OAuth2 with read scope for topics. Results depend on your workspace's topic structure and tagging conventions—if your team doesn't use a 'billing' tag, adjust the query accordingly.

Prompt

@modem merge the three duplicate company records for 'Northwind Trading' into a single entry, keeping the one with the most complete contact info

Output

Merged 3 company records into target company ID c_8x4k9p (Northwind Trading, 47 contacts, last activity Jan 8). The two source companies (c_2m1n5q and c_7j3r8t) have been archived. All associated people (12 from the first duplicate, 8 from the second) are now linked to the surviving record. Historical topics and notes from the merged companies remain accessible under the unified company profile.

Notes

This demonstrates Modem's data hygiene tools—merging duplicate entities is a write operation that permanently consolidates records. Before running, confirm which company record has the canonical data; the merge is irreversible without manual restoration. Requires write scope for companies and people.

Prompt

@modem review all open topics assigned to me, summarize the three most urgent by customer impact, and draft a status update I can send to my manager

Output

You have 9 open topics. Top 3 by urgency: (1) Topic #5204 from MegaCorp—production outage affecting 2,000 users, escalated 6 hours ago, waiting on engineering ETA. (2) Topic #5198 from Startup Inc—billing error blocking their renewal, due tomorrow, finance team looped in. (3) Topic #5187 from Enterprise Co—feature request tied to $50k expansion deal, sales wants update by EOD. Draft update: 'Currently managing 9 active topics. Highest priority: resolving MegaCorp's P1 outage (eng engaged), unblocking Startup's renewal (finance reviewing), and delivering feature scoping to Enterprise Co for their expansion. Expect MegaCorp resolution by end of day; other two tracking to close this week.'

Notes

This example pairs Modem's topic-retrieval tools with the AI's reasoning to synthesize a management-ready summary. The AI infers urgency from metadata (escalation flags, customer tier, deadlines) that Modem surfaces. Output quality depends on how well your topics capture context—sparse notes yield sparse summaries.

Use-case deep-dives

CRM cleanup after acquisition

When Modem MCP wins for post-merger data consolidation

A 6-person ops team just absorbed a competitor's customer list and needs to dedupe 800 company records and 2,000 contacts in their CRM. Modem MCP is the right call here because the bulk merge tools (merge companies, merge people, merge topics) let you script the consolidation in a single AI session instead of clicking through a UI for days. The OAuth2 flow means your team lead authorizes once and the whole workspace can run cleanup scripts together. The threshold: if you're merging fewer than 50 records, the manual UI is faster than writing the merge logic. But past that point, Modem's batch operations and durable agent runs (which you can cancel mid-flight if the logic goes sideways) pay off immediately. If your CRM lives in Modem and you're facing a one-time data crunch, this MCP turns a week-long slog into an afternoon.

Support ticket topic taxonomy

When Modem MCP handles recurring topic grooming at scale

A 4-person support team uses Modem to track customer topics (feature requests, bug reports, onboarding questions) and the taxonomy drifts every quarter as new product areas launch. Modem MCP is a fit if you're bulk-updating or merging 20+ topics per grooming session—use the bulk update and merge topics tools to re-tag batches in one pass, then associate the cleaned topics back to companies. The durable agent runs mean you can kick off a long re-categorization job, check status asynchronously, and cancel if the rules misfire. The trade-off: if your topic count is under 100 and changes are infrequent, the Modem UI is simpler. But if you're grooming monthly and your topic graph has 500+ nodes, scripting the cleanup in Switchy with this MCP saves hours and keeps the whole team's taxonomy in sync.

Sales ops lead enrichment

When Modem MCP automates lead-to-account linking for small sales teams

A 3-person sales team imports leads from conferences and webinars every week, then manually associates people with companies in Modem before reps start outreach. Modem MCP is the right tool if you're processing 50+ new leads per batch—use the add people to company and create companies tools to script the enrichment flow (look up domain, create or match company, link person). OAuth2 means the sales ops lead authorizes once and the whole team can trigger the script from Switchy when new lead CSVs arrive. The boundary: if you're adding fewer than 20 leads per week, the manual workflow is fine. But past that threshold, the MCP turns a 2-hour Friday chore into a 10-minute script run. If your lead volume is climbing and your CRM is Modem, this integration keeps your pipeline data clean without hiring a data analyst.

Frequently asked

What does Modem MCP do in Switchy?

Modem MCP lets your team manage CRM-style entities — companies, people, and topics — directly from Switchy's AI workspace. You can create, merge, bulk-update, and associate records without switching to Modem's web app. It also exposes Modem's durable agent runs, so you can check status or cancel long-running workflows from inside a Switchy conversation.

Do I need admin access to connect Modem MCP?

You'll need OAuth2 credentials from your Modem organization, which typically requires admin or developer permissions to generate. The integration uses 15 write-heavy tools, so whoever connects it should have authority to create, merge, and bulk-edit companies, people, and topics. Check with your Modem admin before linking it to Switchy.

Can Modem MCP read existing records or only write new ones?

The tool list focuses on write operations — create, merge, bulk-update, and associate. There's no explicit "search companies" or "list people" tool shown, so you'll likely need to know record IDs in advance or use Modem's web interface for discovery. The integration is designed for batch edits and data hygiene, not exploratory queries.

How does this compare to using Modem's API directly?

Modem MCP wraps the vendor's API into conversational tools, so you skip writing scripts or cURL commands. The trade-off is less flexibility — you're limited to the 15 exposed operations. If your workflow needs custom queries or advanced filtering, you'll still want direct API access. For routine merges and bulk updates, the MCP is faster.

Who on the team should connect Modem MCP to Switchy?

Whoever owns data hygiene in your CRM — usually a RevOps lead or sales operations manager. They'll use it to deduplicate companies, reassign people, and archive stale topics without leaving Switchy. Because the tools can merge and bulk-edit records, limit access to teammates who understand the consequences of batch changes.
